  1. Posted June 16, 2010 by adminStudy shows more Americans biking and walking

The federal Highway Administration just released “The National Biking and Walking Study: a 15 year status report” that shows an increase of trips being made by foot and by bike. Here are some highlights:

-First and foremost, Americans are hitting the sidewalks and streets on foot and by pedal in record numbers. From 1990 to 2009, the number of trips taken on foot more than doubled from 18 billion to 42.5 billion. Similarly, the number of bike trips increased from 1.7 billion to 4 billion.

    Bike-Ped Trips

-According to the 2009 National Household Travel Survey, bicycling and walking now account for 11.9% of all trips. It’s not the 15.8% we hoped to see, but–considering the increase in population and overall number of trips–it’s progress.

-Even better, the safety data is also promising. From 1994 to 2008, the number of pedestrians killed decreased by 22.3% and the number of bicyclists killed decreased by 12%. Since the number of trips taken on foot or on bike has more than doubled in the same period, those declines are a good sign of increased safety.

  6. Posted February 24, 2010 by adminChrome Shoes in Stock!

WheelHouse is now fully stocked with some of the most durable, stylish, and practical (on the bike and off) shoes on the market. The shoes are made by Chrome, the folks who gave you the iconic seatbelt messenger bag, so you know they are built tough. We have two different models in stock, the Midway and Arnhem. The Midway comes with a cordura upper in Brown and Black and the Arnhem is more “chukka” style with a black suede upper. Both boast a re-inforced fiber glass shank midsole, a low-profile design so they can fit in your toe straps, and metal lace ends so you don’t fray your shoelaces. Come down and grab a pair, they all go for $90…. might be the best $90 shoe you ever buy.

Black and White Bakfiets Family Fun The Lange Bike Family

Most of the folks that roll through the shop have never seen a box bike before. This is why we encourage people who are curious to take one for a spin around our parking lot. There is definitely a learning curve for most folks when they start charging forward, but once people get the hang of it, it’s all smiles. So next time you are in the shop, give in to that curiosity and take a Bakfiets for a spin.

“Keep ‘er upfront, I’ll only be a minute”….. Ever since we opened in May 2009 we’ve been offering free bike valet for Saturday morning farmer’s market patrons. We’ve parked as many as 50 bikes in a day and have come across some beauties. Below is a gallery of some of the coolest, jaw-dropping, silly, and inspiring bikes. As always, we start valeting bikes for the Saturday morning farmer’s markets at 8:30 am. If you ride a bike to the market, come say hi!

The pictures with the cool looking trailer labeled “we share the same stomach” was done by a young artist touring the west coast named Maria Michealson. Her concept is awesome so please check it out here.

    Breuklen

    Broncks

As we starting gearing up for Spring, we decided to do some early cleaning. So, our entire Bowery Lane city bike rental fleet will be on sale until they are gone! Normally we sell the Brueklen and Broncks at a retail price of $650 (they go for $695 online), but our lightly used fleet will be going for $450! Thats over 30% off our list price! These are American made street machines with classic Euro styling, both the rear wooden boxes, Lepper sprung leather saddle, and cork grips are stained for a vintage look and to increase longevity. The single-speed drive train and upright riding style are great for city cycling, beach cruising, and campus jaunts. The frames are built in Brooklyn, NY and all the trim and accessory pieces are manufactured by Wald, meaning this bike was fully built in the USA. We have 3 Brueklens (step-through) and 3 Broncks (diamond-style) left. They are one size fits most. To peep out the specs, check out Bowery Lane Bicycles. Enjoy your ride.

  11. Posted January 19, 2010 by adminBikes for Bucks at WheelHouse!

    Bring in that old bike!

With 2009 behind us and a fresh and exciting 2010 coming up, WheelHouse has decided to do a twist on the “Cash for Clunkers” program to encourage more people to get out of their cars and on their bikes. We are excited to introduce our 1st annual “Bikes for Bucks” program.

So, take that beaten up clunker out of your garage or grab your old everyday rider and bring it down to WheelHouse between January 29th-31st and trade it in for deep discounts on some of the best city, commuting, and cargo carrying bikes in around.

But what will you bike guys do with all those used bikes?
The bikes being traded in will go to the local community bicycle shop, Bici Centro. We will take all kinds of repairable* bikes but priority will be on bikes of the road and kids variety. Each person is allowed to trade in as many bikes as they want, but only 1 will be awarded credit towards the purchase of a new bike. Here’s how it goes:

The trade-in credit will be worth $50 off any bicycle we sell under $1000 (excludes Skuuts), this is $50 off the last marked price which means you can get a killer deal on already marked down bikes.

The trade credit will be worth $100 on any bicycle we sell over $1000 including specially ordered Surly or Jamis bikes.

The trade will also work with our Xtracycle products and Bakfiets cargo bikes. You can apply a $50 credit towards an Xtracycle Freeradical Conversion kit and receive 10% off the installation fee, you can also special order a complete Big Dummy and receive 10% off its purchase price (a $245 value). The credit will also get you $150 off our entire selection of Bakfiets cargo bikes.

But what if I have a bike to trade-in but don’t want to purchase a new bike right away?

All bicycles accepted for trade-in will be awarded a Bikes for Bucks certificate that will be redeemable on new bikes for the remainder of 2010**. Again, you are welcome to trade-in as many bikes as you would like but only 1 trade-in credit will be given per person and only 1 trade-in credit can be redeemed per purchase. If you have more questions, feel free to contact WheelHouse at 805-845-6547 or e-mail us at info@wheelhousebikes.com.

*Repairable bike: A repairable bike is defined as: A bicycle that needs less than $50 dollars worth of material to make into a rideable and sellable used bike.  The decision on whether or not a bike is “repairable” will be made by a representative of WheelHouse, and while we are subjective in nature, we’ll strive to be as objective as possible. Priority will be placed on bikes that are needed by Bici Centro but all will be considered.

**The trade-in credit will be redeemable on any bicycle WheelHouse sells (including special orders) through February 2010. After February through the remainder of 2010, the credit can be redeemed for any sale bicycle.

  16. Posted July 1, 2009 by adminSunday Night Bike in Movies

The past few Sunday Nights at WheelHouse we have been congregating out on our patio, throwing a drop cloth on the wall and projecting movies. The event has been dubbed “Sunday Night Bike in Movies” and has had an awesome turnout for the past couple of the sessions. The deal is this, ride your bike over to WheelHouse between 8:15 and 8:30 on Sunday evenings, grab a spot to sit, and enjoy some classic films with good people. Previous movies have been The Big Lebowski, Blazing Saddles, The Bird Cage, and most recently, Wet Hot American Summer. All are welcome and encouraged to come. There is bike parking for all and most people usually bring some snacks or drinks. People are also encouraged to bring folding chairs to increase seating capacity. Lots of good people, lots of bikes….. lots of fun. Enjoy your ride.

On Wednesday, June 24th, we at WheelHouse were honored with the  presence of the Santa Barbara Burger Bus. If you haven’t heard, the Burger Bus is a rolling slice of heaven. They use local ingredients from folks like Shalhoobs (www.shalhoobs.com) and Our Daily Bread (www.ourdailybread.net) and create culinary works of art like the CBs and J, cheeseburgers and jelly. Check out their website,www.theburgerbus.com. They will be here at WheelHouse again this Wednesday and hopefully for many Wednesdays to come. Stop on by, eat a burger on the WheelHouse patio, ride a bike, and enjoy yourself.

The McClintock 7 made its first official public debut this past weekend at the Santa Barbara Solstice Parade. After some inspiration from Ricardo, the Artistic Director of the Solstice Parade, we rounded up a group of enthusiastic riders and headed down to the Solstice Workshop for a quick round of decorating. This year’s solstice theme was “Splash” and what emerged from the eclectic workshop was a band of swash-buckling misfits, led by Sir Edward Francois, dedicated to exciting the crowd with the pedal-powered McClintock 7 a.k.a the USS WheelHouse. 19. Posted June 25, 2009 by adminTHE CONFERENCE BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!

We at WheelHouse were recently tipped off to a smoking deal on an online repossession site (www.stealitback.com). We were intrigued to find that a 7-seater conference bike was up for auction and extremely pleased when we saw the price. After a few days of agonizing over whether or not we really needed it and a small but fierce bidding war, we became the proud new owners of a used red 7-seater Conference Bike. Suffice to say, we danced and jumped around like elementary school girls for a solid 15 minutes after the auction ended and we had been named the official winners. Just a little background on the conference bike: it’s a 7-seat pedal powered vehicle designed in Germany by Velo.Saliko after an idea of Eric Staller (www.conferencebike.com). The original idea by Mr. Staller was one in a long series of “Urban UFO’s” that were designed to inspire, excite, and bewilder the masses. Each of the 7-seats has pedals that link up to a circular drive shaft. The vehicle is steered using a steering wheel and a Volkswagen rack and pinion steering system. It has hydraulic two front drum brakes (actuated by a foot pedal) and a hydraulic rear disc brake as well as dynamos on the front wheels that power the front headlights. Meaning, the Conference Bike is the coolest bike we have ever laid eyes on and will one day soon be the most recognizable vehicle in Santa Barbara.

    The arrival!

After an abnormally long week of waiting, a large panel truck pulled into the WheelHouse parking lot. There was an overwhelming sense of excitement coupled with a sliver of nervousness due to the fact that we had never seen, in person, what exactly it was we had bought. The Delivery Man jumped out of the cab with a giant grin on his face and quickly opened the back to show us the magnificent machine. As soon as it hit the ground he told us that it was by far the “coolest thing” he had ever delivered in his 22 years of shipping. Upon closer inspection there were a few minor flaws that needed to be addressed, including: 4 ripped seats, a loose chain guide, and the replacement of a lever and caliper for the rear disc break. Overall, it was in good, functioning condition and we quickly began patting each other on the back and throwing around compliments for the best purchase thus far in WheelHouse history. After standing in awe of the Conference Bike for several minutes, we decided to take it on a test ride around the parking lot with the Delivery-Man and the WheelHouse Crew. After two short laps around the parking lot, a couple of women pulled into the lot to take pictures and drink in the sight of the Conference Bike. With one extra seat open, it didn’t take much convincing before we had one of them pedaling around with us.

    The first ride

After tooling around the parking lot for a while we started throwing out names in hopes of finding the perfect title for the 7-seater. After some off the top suggestions like “Septapus” (Octopus amputee) and the “Spider Bike”, we decided to pay homage to the original locator of the Conference Bike, Matt McClintock (www.bicyclefetish.com). With the McClintock Brothers’ blessing, the 7-seater conference bike shall be known from this day forward as “The McClintock 7”. With this said, there has been a sort of challenge to trump the good title of  The McClintock 7 with the newest/coolest/silliest name possible. The name will not change, but due to the fine efforts put forth by many people we decided to put The McClintock 7 into the Wu-Tang Clan realm of naming, meaning the McClintock 7 will be adopting numerous aliases along the way, for example: The McClintock 7 a.k.a The McClintock a.k.a The USS WheelHouse a.k.a The Fire Breathing Red Rhino, etc.  This way, all the well thought out names that deserve recognition will be added onto the list and the legend of The McClintock 7 will be sure to grow.

    Out at night

After spending the rest of the day looking for seats and inspecting the ingenious engineering of The McClintock 7, we closed up shop and got ready for the maiden voyage. The route was a no-brainer, we decided to hit State St. and see what kind of attention this puppy would get. Seconds after turning onto State St., we had more attention than most of us could bear. If you want to know what it feels like to be a rock-star or well-known celebrity, come ride The McClintock 7 with us. We had an open seat and  no shortage of interest to fill it. We took it up State to De La Guerra Plaza, back down State, out onto the Wharf and back up to WheelHouse. One ride was all it took, this was a great purchase.

Look out for The McClintock 7 in your neck of the Santa Barbara woods, and if there’s an open seat, hop on and soak in the experience.

    Enjoy your ride.

  20. Posted May 28, 2009 by adminUSPS Trike-Pedal Powered Mailmen

    img_0698

The other day we were speaking with a USPS representative about various shipping rates and part way through our business conversation he noticed our giant Dutch trike. The conversation quickly moved towards the incredible piece of machinery that is the Dutch trike and all the possibilities it can bring to small market vendors. After taking it for a spin, the USPS representative mentioned a smaller mail trike that he had seen once at the Post Office on Canon Perdido and Anacapa and we expressed a child like interest in wanting to see it. He said he would ask the Post Master about it and see about bringing it by.

After he left, we had doubts about ever seeing the three-wheeled mail transport, but just a few short hours later, the same USPS rep pedaled into the parking lot on a tricked out USPS trike! It was flying the USPS colors with a white frame, red chain guard, and blue fenders. After picking our jaws up off the floor, we asked why more of these trikes weren’t being used to deliver mail and he explained that theft and size of territory were the biggest issues. If I were delivering mail I would love to cruise around on a USPS trike, especially in sunny Santa Barbara.

    img_0697

So please, for just a moment, imagine all the mail in the world being delivered by pedal-powered transport….

….oh what a world it would be.

    Bici BBQ

May 16th to May 24th is Santa Barbara’s Bike Week, a weeklong celebration of the most efficient machine ever created by man. Everyday there is a bicycle themed event and for the entire week State St. is covered in the logo of the SB Bike Coalition (www.sbbike.org).  The celebration began on Saturday at Bici Centro (www.bicicentro.org) with an awesome BBQ and custom bike show. Beautiful bikes from dozens of bike enthusiasts were being displayed, including one of WheelHouse’s own Bakfiets (the deep purple one). There were burgers on the grill and Telegraph beer (www.telegraphbrewing.com) in everyone’s cup. There was a great turnout and all the proceeds went to Bici Centro.

    Bike to School Day

Later that week on Tuesday May 19th, WheelHouse rolled out to Hollister Elementary School to help promote bike to school day. It was an early morning, but we were pleased to be greeted by the smiling face of Don Lubach of the bike coalition. Don helped setup the event, which is fitting considering he rides his daughters to school everyday (A picture of Don’s Bianchi longtail with him riding and his daughter standing on the back is currently on thehomepage of www.xtracycle.com).

Erik having fun with the kids

Erik having fun with the kids

We setup Evan’s Big Dummy and loaded the purple Bakfiets with stickers, buttons, and informational flyers as kids and parents started coming in. Matt McClintock was posted up next to us with his immaculate Azor Opa (fitted with some sweet black Brooks Panniers) and beside him was Sam the bike man at the ready, with his tool set and stand, waiting for the loose wheels and flat tires that were soon to come. It began with a slow trickle at 7, and then towards 8 it became a steady stream of students and parents. Our stickers and buttons were an instant hit but we were soon trumped by a box of bell’s that Don’s father-in-law handed out to all those who rode to school. We often refer to the ringing of a bike bell as a “random act of kindness”, so after dozens of kids got their hands on the incredi-bells there was an overwhelming wave of bicycle bell kindness in the repetitive sound of high-pitched ding-dings. After throwing a few bells on some bikes, we said good-bye to the kids and all those who helped make bike to school day a success and headed back to the shop.

    Bike to Work Day

Just a day after bike to school day, we were off to help out with the festivities of the SB Bike Coalition and Traffic Solutions’ Bike to Work Day. WheelHouse was offered the incredible opportunity to setup and operate the bike valet and like any right-minded people we jumped at the opportunity. The day before the event the mobility coordinator of the city, Sarah Grant, came by the shop with a trunk full of fruit, water, and juice. While we helped her unload all the goodies, she picked up a few items from the WheelHouse inventory to raffle off at Bike to Work Day.

    img_0738

    img_0742

The following morning, we woke up at 5 a.m. and headed to the shop to start setting up. With help of Sarah Grant and two good friends, Eli and Rebecca, we loaded up the Dutch trike with all of the valet gear and a red Bakfiets with all the food and drink for the event and cruised over to State and De La Guerra. The event showcased a live band, great food, prize raffles, and of course bike valet. There was a solid turnout and we seemed to be parking and un-parking bikes consistently the entire time.

    img_0753

People love when they can cruise up on their bike, hand it off to be parked and come pick it up when they are done with their business, there is no need to hassle with finding a bike parking spot, locks, and potential theft. It seems it would be in the city’s best interest to include bike valet at all major events not only because it would encourage the use of alternative transportation but it would help relieve traffic congestion and SOV(Single Occupancy Vehicle) parking complications.

When all was said and done at 9 we packed up the valet service and headed back to the shop to open. Thanks to all that helped us with the valet and to those who helped make bike to work day a success. We’d like to thank our Jamis Rep Kip Byars for loaning us some sweet Jamis pop-up tents; they’ve been put to good use. Participating in the bike week events has been fun and informative, but one week isn’t enough. We need to celebrate the glorious bicycle every week of every year and explore the large-scale possibilities of bikes in Santa Barbara. We need to get away from looking at riding through the lens of “bike culture” and make all culture in and around this town include bikes. More bikes, more smiles, enjoy your ride.

  22. Posted May 13, 2009 by adminWheelHouse Shout Out!!

WheelHouse is now officially open for business and selling the latest and greatest in practical cycling gear. As we reflect on where we started, where we are, and where we want to go, we feel it’s necessary to give a couple shout-outs to those folks who were pivotal in the creation of WheelHouse. If, for some reason, you feel you should have received a shout out and didn’t, forgive us, call us, and we will personally thank you. We know this isn’t the Oscars, so please bear with us and hopefully we can run through the shout out list before we get booted by the generic “end your speech now” music.

    Let’s begin.

We would like to give a shout out to our families, first and foremost. The Minogues/Jacksons/Guthies and the Wrights. Without your love, support, and help none of this would be possible. We are both extremely grateful and proud to have such wonderful families, we love you all.

Next, we’d like to give a shout-out to some friends, new and old. Thank you to all you guys at 231 Mansfield for putting up with our shenanigans last fall as we worked through our business plan. Thank you to our two current roommates, Jenn and Trevor for keeping the house on lock down. Thanks to the Bici Centro Crew (www.bicicentro.org) and specifically to Ed, Thomas, and Eli for helping us wrench together some sweet classic dutch and Jamis bikes and for keeping us sane through some of those long nights.

We’d also like to shout out the new proprietors of SB Pedi Cab (www.sbpedicab.com), Jim and Brittany. Thanks for all the advertising, merchandising, and labor help that you provided. We are stoked to know you both and believe you will make the Pedicabs in SB better than ever.

The next shout out goes to all of those people who helped with the business side of things. First, Evan’s wonderful grandma Barbara, thank you for keeping us on our toes with the business side of the business and for helping us sort through the numbers. Thanks to Kim and Warren Wileman for helping us put together our business plan and for pressure wash anything and everything around the store. Thanks to Pablo and Jimmi for painting the interior and exterior of the shop and for putting up the coolest art piece in SB. Thanks to Pete Ehlen for drawing up our building plans, to Brian and Cole for putting up with us and putting up our cash wrap and to Kip Byars for believing in our vision.

We’d like to give our final shout out to those in the industry who have taught us what we know, to Stu Hennessey at Alki Bike and Board (www.alkibikeandboard.com), to Sherry and Tim at Switchback Cyclery (www.switchbackcyclery.com), and to Stewart and Allison at Roll (www.roll-online.com) and Tony Hirsch, your hard work and knowledge have left a lasting impression on the both of us.

That ends the shout out blog entry. Que the music and roll the credits, or just check out the before and after pictures of the shop we’ve posted below. Thanks for reading and enjoy your ride.
